dcHotelRoster.com FAQ

How do I get around DC?
. Click here for a copiously detailed answer.
Why are hotels on dcHotelRoster.com listed in this order?
. We put the list in increasing order of distance from the Washington Monument rather than something like "City Center" because this monument is the most recognizable feature of the city & the focal point of the National Mall. If you come to D.C., you're going to want to see the Mall. We also show distances to the main train station (Union Station) & all 3 area airports.
How are drive times & walking times estimated at dcHotelRoster.com?
. Distances & drive times are from Google Maps estimated by Google-magic. Walking times assume a pace of 2.5 miles per hour. The accepted "average walking pace" seems to be about 3 mph, so we scaled that back to account for traffic lights.
How do I get to & around Washington, D.C.? metrorail websitewill give you the combo of trains (metrorail map) & buses to get "anywhere." Separately, the DC Circulatoris a different bus system that's especially easy for tourists to master. Buses (about $1) circulate through 3 different loops. The Mall loop goes 'round the mall. Then there's the east/west Union Station/Georgetown loop & the north/south Convention Center / Waterfront loop. Each loop stops at numerous metrorail stations. If you're stuck somewhere, call 202-0637-7000 & they'll tell you which combination of buses & trains to take to get you anywhere.

But first, let's get you into the city.
  • From
  • Reagan National Airport, it's a short cab ride to the city. The metrorailblue (toward Largo Town Center) & yellow (toward Fort Totten) lines are also a good option. Check with your hotel to find out which line gets you closer to their location. If you want to take the train straight to the mall area, take the yellow line to Archives/Navy Memorialstation or the blue line to either the Smithsonianor the Federal Trianglestation. The only station actually ON the mall itself is the Smithsonian but the other two are a relatively short walk south to the mall. The mall is 2 miles long from the east (near the Capitol Building) to the west (the Lincoln Memorial) end so prepare for some walking. All of the above named stations are on the eastern half of the mall.

  • From
  • Dulles Int'l Airport, the Washington Flyer Coach(under $10) will take you to the West Falls Churchmetrorailstation according to a set schedule. Then take the train toward New Carrolltoninto the city. The Super Shuttleis a shared van service that will take you point to point for a lot less than a cab ride.

  • From
  • Baltimore-Washington Int'l (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport, the Express Metro Bustakes you directly to the Greenbeltmetrorailstation. From there take the train toward the Branch Avenuestation. Both the Amtrakand MARCtrains go to the Union Stationmetro stop on the red line. BWI also offers a Super Shuttlepoint to point bus service, a reserved shuttleservice. By the way, in our experience BWI is the least expensive of the 3 airports.

  • Amtraktrains have stops at both the Union Station(red line) and New Carrollton(orange line) metrorailstations. From Union Station, take the train toward Shady Grove. New Carrolltonis at the end of the line, so your only option is the train toward Vienna.
