Last Class
Seeds are floating from the cottonwoods
And the wind is up. All around us,
Poets gather on grass, the air carries
White puffs. We read each others words
Wondering is this as close as we'll come
To the flight of clouds? Or is this
What flying means -- sitting in Spring,
Our bodies full of birds and grass and words
Wondering as cottonwoods whisper at our ears?
I do not know the word for this vision
This congregation of poet bodies, poet words
Beneath this tree. But just this once,
This single sunlit singing afternoon,
Love will do.

Newton's Toes
Imagination sighed in Newton's toes
Fluttered languid in the grass
Beneath the tree. Rain

Was on the corn some days,
But how it got there wasn't clear.
It was a mystery, like corn

And then a breeze came up.
An apple struck his peaceful head
And wiped the smile away

He watched as corn rose madly.
Water sought its level,
Rain prepared to fall as ever.

His feet were dumbstruck
As imagination held its breath
And rode the rapids

To his head, the very bone
The apple struck. He rose
Enlightened too excited to be sad,

Surveyed the land
And that was gravity.

Gandalf
a Christmas poem for Christine, 1991

What would he look like
If he went to heaven?

Maybe a little whiter,
to reflect the casting -
off of all those bits of dark pain
he gathered on his rounds
he probably wouldn't even remember
the creature locked in the garage,
the wild face at the small square window,
the terror of the growls.

Maybe a little smaller,
a little younger,
just because that's how heaven is.

Maybe always sitting calm,
face upturned,
waiting for God
or you.

Maybe that's
what gandy'd look like
if he went to heaven
Free, poised,
waiting for a voice
to call his name.
