| The infantry group installed on the north side of Grant's pedestal. Shrady sketched the two panels in clay but his death left them unfinished. He had reluctantly hired a young assistant, Edmund Amateis, to assist him but was still unable to finish. They were completed by sculptor Sherry Fry and installed in 1924. This panel differs from the south side in several ways. Here the infantry is charging into battle. Notice that... (1) The soldiers have no bedrolls, (2) The rifles have bayonettes, and (3) The drummer boy is drumming. . The "Full Size" link at the top of the page is especially helpful in the case of the infantry groups. Check it out! You'll have a better view here than if you were standing in front of it. |
