This panel differs from the north sidein several ways. Here the infantry is moving on perhaps in preparation for their next battle. Notice that ... (1) The soldiers have bedrolls, (2) Bayonettes have been stowed, and (3) The drummer boy has his drum slung over his back. Here's a close look at the drummer on the other panel.

Two of the three artillerymen, seated on the caisson, are visible in the background. According to a plaqueon the east side of this group, the man featured here was modeled by USMA cadet Henry J. Weeks of the class of 1908. To his left, the guidon(modeled by Fairfax Ayres) seems to be calling out`to signal a turn as he holds the guidon flagin his left hand. Forward of the wheel driver, the 'lead driver'(modeled by James E. Chaney) struggles to bring the lead horse, front legs pawing the air, under control. Close inspection reveals that part of the gear holding that horse to the team has broken.

Other Inscriptions on the Grant Memorial:
  • The artillery group bears three inscriptions (that I know of);
    1. the models for three of the six men here are identified on theeast sideof the group.
    2. The west side bears the less discernible inscriptionHenry Merwin Shrady 1911, and
    3. few have noticed that directly beneath the caisson a plate reads,'1911 This (?) group (?) is (?) affectionately dedicated by the sculptor to Alice (?) V Morris and Dave (?) H Morris'.
  • The cavalry group bears an equally mysterious inscription, a tribute to one
  • Helen M. Wrighton the stirrupof the fallen rider. The east side of that group also bears the artist's name & the year, but unlike that on the artillery group, this inscription, 'H M Shrady 1915'is scratched on rather than engraved. I wonder what's the meaning of the triangle with a vertical line down its middle.
  • In the central group the base of each lion identifies the
  • artiston one side & where the bronze was caston the other. The artist is also identified on the south side of the Grant/Cincinnatus base (look near the horse's rear hoof). I can't tell yet if there's anything on the north side -- the sun isn't cooperating.
