| Of the 100+ pictures on the site, this is my favorite. The 'wheel driver' astride the left rear of the four horses harnessed to the caisson. Two of the three artillerymen, seated on the caisson, are visible in the background. According to a plaque on the east side of this group, the man featured here was modeled by USMA cadet Henry J. Weeks of the class of 1908. To his left, the guidon (modeled by Fairfax Ayres) seems to be calling out`to signal a turn as he holds the guidon flag in his left hand. Forward of the wheel driver, the 'lead driver' (modeled by James E. Chaney) struggles to bring the lead horse, front legs pawing the air, under control. Close inspection reveals that part of the gear holding that horse to the team has broken. To help you keep it in perspective, click here for a view of the entire artillery group from the west and click here for a view from the east. |
