This bronze, life-sized Jesus holds out the halves of a loaf of bread, symbolizing Holy Communion. The sculptor purposely designed this welcoming figure to be placed near ground level. The work was commissioned by the 41st International Eucharistic Congress, which drew more than a million visitors to the city in 1976.

During the Congress the sculpture's original plaster version was displayed indoors. After being cast in bronze, the work was placed here next to the Cathedral and formally blessed in 1978. It is owned by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
