Getting around DC
Reference book:
'Washington Sculpture'
by James M. Goode
How do I find a particular sculpture?
I just want to browse. What do you recommend?
How are sculptures organized?
Why does the site map have more than just Goode's 16 areas?
Which D.C. sculptures have you included?
How can I learn more about a particular sculpture?
How do I get to & around Washington, D.C.?
Why is "V" used instead of "U" and "I" instead of "J" on so many inscriptions?

The metrorail website will give you the combo of trains (metrorail map) & buses to get "anywhere." Separately, the DC Circulator is a different bus system that's especially easy for tourists to master. Buses (about $1) circulate through 3 different loops. The Mall loop goes 'round the mall. Then there's the east/west Union Station/Georgetown loop & the north/south Convention Center / Waterfront loop. Each loop stops at numerous metrorail stations. If you're stuck somewhere, call 202-0637-7000 & they'll tell you which combination of buses & trains to take to get you anywhere.
But first, let's get you into the city.
- From Reagan National Airport, it's a short cab ride to the city. The metrorail blue (toward Largo Town Center) & yellow (toward Fort Totten) lines are also a good option. Check with your hotel to find out which line gets you closer to their location. If you want to take the train straight to the mall area, take the yellow line to Archives/Navy Memorial station or the blue line to either the Smithsonian or the Federal Triangle station. The only station actually ON the mall itself is the Smithsonian but the other two are a relatively short walk south to the mall. The mall is 2 miles long from the east (near the Capitol Building) to the west (the Lincoln Memorial) end so prepare for some walking. All of the above named stations are on the eastern half of the mall.

- From Dulles Int'l Airport, the Washington Flyer Coach (under $10) will take you to the West Falls Church metrorail station according to a set schedule. Then take the train toward New Carrollton into the city. The Super Shuttle is a shared van service that will take you point to point for a lot less than a cab ride.
- From Baltimore-Washington Int'l (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport, the Express Metro Bus takes you directly to the Greenbelt metrorail station. From there take the train toward the Branch Avenue station. Both the Amtrak and MARC trains go to the Union Station metro stop on the red line. BWI also offers a Super Shuttle point to point bus service, a reserved shuttle service. By the way, in our experience BWI is the least expensive of the 3 airports.
-
Amtrak trains have stops at both the Union Station (red line) and New Carrollton (orange line) metrorail stations. From Union Station, take the train toward Shady Grove. New Carrollton is at the end of the line, so your only option is the train toward Vienna.
