I started with the 548 sculptures that Goode identifies in one or both of his books. His 1974 book, "Outdoor Sculpture," had 327 entries. He added another 221 sculptures for his new book, "Washington Sculpture." (Note: The new book has 503 of these 548 listings. The other 45 were dropped, in some cases because the sculpture is no longer in place). As of 9/2009 I've cataloged well over 1,000 individual sculptures in the D.C. area & have posted photographs of around 900 of these.
